New Orleans Hornets Team The New Orleans Hornets is a professional National Basketball Association team that is located in New Orleans in Louisiana. Owing to the Hurricane Katrina the team was temporarily relocated to Oklahoma, for a couple of seasons but returned to New Orleans for 2007-2008 season. The name of the team has been derived from the resistance that was put up against the British, commonly known as the ‘'Hornets' Nest''. The team plays in the Southwest Division of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It was originally established in 1988-89 as the Charlotte Hornets and was located in North Carolina.
Read Details It debuted in 1988 as the Charlotte Hornets. It was headed by Kelly Tripucka, who was the teams’ top scorer for the initial couple of seasons. In 1992-93 season the Hornets utilized their second draft pick to acquire Alonzo Mourning. With his acquisition the team had a very strong trio that featured Johnson, Mourning and Gill. They made it to the playoffs and defeated the Boston. Unfortunately they lost out to the New York Knicks. They made it to the playoffs again in the following year but were defeated by opponents the Chicago Bulls. In 2002 the Hornets were granted the permission for relocation to New Orleans. The Hornets were successful in qualifying for the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year but were defeated by Philadelphia once more. Owing to the continuous failures the team planned to rebuild itself and the older players such as Baron Davis and Jamal Mashaburn were traded for younger players for the facilitation of the rebuilding process. The attendance on the teams’ matches was very low and continued to decline. They had a brief brush with popularity after the appointment of Byron Scott as their coach and the acquisition of Chris Paul. But after a tepid start as far as the attendance was concerned, it rapidly picked up recently in the months of March and April of this year. They have recorded twelve out of 17 sell-outs in its last home games. In fact it has made an official announcement regarding the acquisition of almost 3,500 new ticket holders. As mentioned before the team was relocated to Oklahoma owing to the devastation that was caused by the Hurricane Katrina. They stayed in Oklahoma City for two seasons in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Some of the players that are prently playing for the team include Brandon Bass, P.J Brown, Rasual Butler, Speedy Claxton, Chris Paul, Kirk Snyder, Jackson Vroman, Aaron Williams and Desmond Mason. The team was scandalized in January 2006 owing to Chris Andersen’s dismissal as a result of violating the NBA's drug policy. He has been dismissed for two years and cannot apply for reinstatement. After his dismissal the Hornets acquired Aaron Williams and Steven Hunter in exchange for several picks.
